The Fountain of 99 Spouts
The Fountain of 99 Spouts is almost the identity of L'Aquila. Since the 13th Century the beautiful fountain has been running continuosly until the 2009 earthquake that severly damaged it. Not long ago it was restored and opened to the public again.
The Fountain of the 99 Spouts was completed in 1272. It wasn’t called the Fountain of the 99 Spouts then because back then there wasn't 99 spouts.
It was called the Fountain of the Rivera after the central neighbourhood adjacent to the river Aterno in which it was built. The 93 spouts, spout from stone faces, each one is different, it represents figures from mythology, animals, monks, knights and many more.
There are another 6 spots sitting a flat wall on the side of the piazza, they were most probably added to make the foundation myth true.
